Letter from the President

Dec 19, 2002

Dear ACS Fellows:

There has been no better time to belong to the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Russell’s efforts to reorganize the College have provided a new look and a more functional organization to the membership of the College. This new organization and leadership will provide new and better opportunities for research, education, advocacy and services for the fellows.
This opportunity extends to the State of Indiana, the councilors and I would like to invite you as fellows of the American College of Surgeons into the membership of the Indiana Chapter. For those of you who are members, we thank you for your continuing support. I would like to take this moment to provide you information about the services the Indiana Chapter provide to you as a member of the Chapter. The Chapter provides a voice to the College through your Governors, Drs. James Madura, and Robert Pennington, and the ISMA through Dr. Ralph Stewart. These men are your advocates and provide an avenue for you to experience the College and the ISMA.
As a member of the State Chapter you have an opportunity for education, service, state and national advocacy and clinical research. I would like to introduce you to members who may help provide you the opportunity for involvement in the State Chapter.
Dr. Michael Dalsing, is our representative to the Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee, Dr. Gregory Sutton, is our ACS Cancer Liaison Chair, Dr. Gerardo Gomez, is the Chairman of the Committee on Trauma, and Dr. Wayne Moore, is our Web master. The Chapter also provides opportunities for our young surgeons to become more involved with the College in the Young Surgeons Program, Dr. Mark Lynch, is our representative. Those interested in advocacy have the opportunity to meet with out nation’s leaders in the Capitol Hill Program.
The Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons is the only single voice of surgeons in the State of Indiana. We invite you to become a member to strengthen that voice in advocacy, education and research for you, your colleagues and your patients. The Chapter meets three times yearly and this year’s annual meeting is June 5 – 7, 2003, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. We would like you to attend. For those interested the deadline for abstract submission is February 1, 2003.
The councilors and I look forward to your participation in the Indiana Chapter of the American College of
Surgeons.

Respectfully yours,

L.R. “Tres” Scherer, III, M.D.
President, Indiana Chapter,
American College of Surgeons
