Ductal Lavage Workshop Presented by Dr. Goulet

A workshop on "Ductal Lavage" was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in Fort WayneDuctal lavage is a technique by which the mammary duct at the nipple is canulated with a fine semiflexible plastic needle.  The duct is then injected with a small amount of fluid which is then gently massaged and aspirated into a collection apparatus.  This is repeated several times. The specimen obtained in this manner is subjected to cytological analysis.

Although malignancy may occasionally be detected by this technique, the primary thrust of this diagnostic procedure is the evaluation of nipple discharge.

The workshop was sponsored in part by Pro-Duct Health, a California company which manufactures the medical device used in the procedure.
